Fort Worth has always had spitters, but few carry the torch for traditional boom bap quite like Brewed Up Joe, also known as J/O/E. Samples, loops, scratches and bars that actually say something are the whole foundation of his sound, and his latest single proves he’s not letting that lane die anytime soon.
Knock Knock
Brewed Up Joe’s newest single is “Knock Knock,” released August 28, 2026 and produced by pHiL Kizer. It’s straight boom bap, built to put unapologetic lyrics and a hard beat loop back at the front of the conversation and put sucka emcees back in their place. The standout for Joe himself is one bar in particular: “Bitter Folk, they never float. Keep in mind, its sink or swim.”
That line sums up the energy of the whole record. There’s no middle ground and no hand holding, you either rise to the level of the craft or you get left behind. It’s the kind of bar that rewards a second listen, which is exactly what boom bap has always been about.
The record is already getting noticed outside of Fort Worth too. Ratings Game Music gave it 4 out of 5 stars and put it plainly:

Karaoke Machines And Cassette Tapes
Brewed Up Joe started rapping around 16, right in the middle of the Swishahouse mixtape era, when everybody was spitting bars off the top of the dome on the mic or in front of a camera. He and his homies kicked raps on a Walmart brand karaoke machine and figured out how to dub their verses over cassette tapes. They said the wildest stuff, but it was all fun, and that fun turned into a passion he still carries today. His take on it is simple: you gotta enjoy this.
For anybody who wasn’t around for it, Swishahouse was the Houston movement that put freestyle culture on wax. The mixtapes were loaded with rappers going off the dome over slowed down instrumentals, and that energy spread across all of Texas. Coming up in that environment taught a whole generation that rapping wasn’t about being perfect, it was about being fearless on the mic.
He studied anybody who was nice on the mic, from Jay Z, Guru, Blu, Mos Def, Del, Atmosphere and Common to Texas legend Z Ro. If you could rap, you had his ear.
That mix of East Coast lyricism, underground storytelling and Texas grit is a big part of what shaped his ear, and you can hear how much he respects the pen game.
Painting Verbal Murals
Sonically, Brewed Up Joe is rooted in what a lot of people call the “true” hip hop sound: samples, loops and scratches. Producers like DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Madlib, Q Tip and Just Blaze always had his attention because their beats transported him outside of himself, and he wanted his words to do the same thing. The goal is to paint pictures and verbal murals, with some fun dropped in here and there. That lane lands him squarely in conscious rap, but never at the expense of having a good time on the record.
Those producers all share something: dusty drums, soulful chops and beats that leave room for the emcee to breathe. That space is where Joe does his best work, stacking imagery and wordplay instead of chasing whatever sound is trending this week.
The Resume
Brewed Up Joe is a two time Fort Worth Weekly Music Award winner in the hip hop category, taking the honor in both 2024 and 2025. On the music side he’s worked with Blu, DJ Pumba, Suave Ski, Semaj Foreman and 88 Killa, and on the stage he’s opened for Bun B as well as rising country star Don Louis. XMG also covered his genre bending single “No Pain” with deep house collective SKAR8.
That list says a lot about his range. Going from trading bars with Blu to opening for Bun B to sharing a stage with a country act takes an artist who’s comfortable in any room, and the back to back awards show the Fort Worth scene has taken notice.
What’s Next
Right now Brewed Up Joe is heads down cooking more music. A follow up to his album Craft Can Classics with Seshun is in the works for late 2026. His advice for anybody watching: stay consistent with what you love to do, because that’s the only way you truly get better.
If “Knock Knock” is any sign of where he’s headed, the next project should be one for the heads. In a time where a lot of rap is built for quick scrolls, Brewed Up Joe is making records meant to be run back.
