6pk 4 The $orrows
JD Nava’s latest project is 6pk 4 The $orrows, a six song EP built to set up a full album in his Sorrows series. It’s a preview of where the bigger project is headed, and Nava calls it some of his best work yet. Track five, “villain$,” carries the line he wants people to sit with most: “Content to be disliked for who I am rather than love for a paystub.”
Finding His Voice
Nava’s love for music started with his father, who had him growing up on everything from rock en español acts like El Tri and Maná to AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, and Pink Floyd. Nava migrated from Mexico to Bryan, Texas at three years old, and music became one of the ways he worked through the cultural displacement that came with growing up an immigrant in a new country. Hearing Control Machete was the turning point that pulled him toward rap and hip-hop for good.
That curiosity turned into obsession during the blog era, when Nava wasn’t just discovering new artists, he was digging into who influenced them, going back to study Nas, Rakim, KRS-One, Mobb Deep, and Wu-Tang Clan. Between that history lesson and modern influences like J. Cole, Drake, and Kanye, Nava built a sound rooted in lyricism and storytelling. He isn’t chasing a viral moment either, what he’s chasing is longevity, and he counts every city and state he’s performed in as its own kind of breakthrough.
The Circle Around Him
Nava’s closest collaborator is Riki, a longtime friend he’s built a full project with, with more music still on the way. Riki recently crossed a million streams on his song “2ThaFloor,” and Nava is just as locked in celebrating that as he is making his own moves. Nava also has a feature on ZBE Bank$’s upcoming project on a song called “Too Real,” a verse he calls one of the best he’s ever given anybody, and he’s been building a relationship with Down in Texas Magazine that’s worth keeping an eye on.
Between the EP, the upcoming feature, and the partnerships stacking up, Nava’s got some notable accomplishments already in motion, and he’s just getting started.
